3 Signs You Might Need to Take a Break From Social Media
If you're like me, then you often find yourself scrolling mindlessly on Instagram and Twitter for hours. You put off things that you should be doing in order to stay up to date with the latest celeb gossip, and to see what your peers have going on. Social media is a great way to connect and meet new people, but it can also be a huge distraction and productivity killer. Here are three signs that you might need to take a break from social media:
1. You find yourself playing the comparison game too often
I know you've seen it. The perfectly curated Instagram feed, with perfect pictures, perfect captions, and perfect emoji placement. You wonder how it's possible for one person to look amazing in every single picture. Then you go to look at your own feed, and quite frankly, it makes you wonder what you're doing with your life. In this age of social media, it is so easy to compare ourselves to other people. However, we have to remember that we are seeing a small percentage of someone's life and it's only what they choose to show us (which is usually all of the good things). If you find yourself comparing yourself to others frequently, it might be time to take a break from social media.
2. You have FOMO when you're off of social media
Have you ever needed to turn your phone off during an exam or work and instantly began to fear that you were missing out on things? You definitely need a social media detox. Missing the latest gossip and the newest tea is not the end all, be all. It's okay for you to not know everything, especially when it's not contributing to your life in any way. If you fear that you're missing out when you're away from social media, you might need to take a break.
3. You can't put your phone down when you're spending time with others
If you can't live in the present or enjoy the time you're spending with other people without looking at social media, you need a detox. Social media is a great way to meet new people, but it is also ruining our ability to communicate with people in real life. If the only way that you can communicate with people is through 140 characters, you might need a social media break.
I used to spend A LOT of time on social media and when I decided to take a break I had no idea what to do with it. One of the things that I started doing and really enjoy is journaling! Instead of waking up every morning and scrolling on IG and Twitter, I try to grab my journal and write in it. I personally use a journal that I created which allows me to write down my morning and night prayers, gratitudes, and affirmations. This starts my day so much better than ingesting the negativity that can show up on social media.
That journal is available here on the site! Click the picture below to purchase or head to the SHOP.
